Community Services

Responsibilities

The Community Services Unit is designated to provide interactive, informative, and innovative presentations and programs for the students and citizens in Orangeburg County. School Resource Officers (SRO), D.A.R.E. Officers, and Crime Prevention Officers work throughout the county to provide invaluable safety tips, communicate the responsibilities of law enforcement, and raise awareness about the issues taking place in the county.

Areas of Involvement

School Resource Officers

Currently 8 deputies (certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as school resource officers) work in middle and high schools in Orangeburg Consolidated School Districts 3, 4, and 5. These men and women maintain safety on the school campus conducive to learning, develop curriculum and activities for their student populations to promote positive attitudes regarding the law enforcement role in society, and serve as a liaison with school personnel and students in a cooperative effort to prevent juvenile delinquency.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE)

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE)A certified Drug Abuse Resistance Education Officer excites middle and high school students through classroom instruction on how to resist peer pressure, live productive drug and violence-free lives. These officers also create relationships between deputies and students to foster a respect for the responsibilities of law enforcement officers.

Gang Resistance Education & Training (GREAT)

Gang Resistance Eduation and Training (GREAT)Gang Resistance Education and Training is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum. With prevention as its primary objective, the program is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership. The program encourages positive relationships among the community, parents, schools, and law enforcement officers.

Crime Prevention

Programs that educate citizens about crime prevention and raise awareness about criminal activity are coordinated through the Crime Prevention Officers of the Community Services Unit.
