The Center for Disability Resources Library - "Be Healthy...Read Healthy"
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Library has received funds from the
South Carolina Legislature for the Be Healthy...Read Healthy project, which aims to increase access to health
information for underserved individuals in rural and urban communities throughout South Carolina.
Access to quality consumer health information empowers patients and their families by
increasing knowledge and improving decision-making. As part of this project, the School of Medicine Library
selected consumer health and disability information resources, ten books and one DVD, to distribute to each county
library system in the state.
A secondary goal of the Be Healthy...Read Healthy project is to promote the Center for
Disability Resources (CDR) Library, which is part of the School of Medicine Library, as a resource for South
Carolina citizens and public librarians. The Center for Disability Resources Library lends materials to anyone
living in South Carolina. From the library's web site (http://uscm.med.sc.edu/CDR),
individuals can search the online catalog for materials and request information via email or phone, as well as
visiting the library in person.
Steve Wilson, the Coordinator of the Center for Disability Resources Library, will mail
materials to families and professionals working with individuals with special needs. He includes a postage-paid
mailer to families requesting materials so they can return materials for free.
