The Orangeburg County Office of Emergency Services was created in 1988. The office was originally the Emergency Preparedness Department. This new name reflects the additional roles and responsibilities of the office.
When the County is threatened by a disaster or major emergency the Office of Emergency Services is the co-ordinating agency for response to the incident. We are responsible for insuring the safety of the citizens of the County, developing plans to deal with the incidents and co-ordinating the response to them.
The Office of Emergency Services manages the following areas:
- Emergency Management Program
- Hazardous Materials Program
- Special Tactics and Rescue Team
- Search and Rescue Task Force
- Emergency Communications and 911 Call Center
- Co-ordination with FEMA, the Department of Homeland Security, and Citizen Corps/CERT
Staff members are on call 24 hours a day to respond to emergencies and incidents anywhere in the County. Emergency response incidents include:
- Natural disasters & severe weather
- Hazardous materials events
- Search events/missing persons
- Public health emergencies
- Transportation accidents
- Specialized/technical rescues
- Or any incident at the request of any agency on scene
